bah and also humbug to this country that qualifies drivers for a license. In Australia it's split, auto and manual, the auto we refer to simply as a "steering license". Also, you'd be required to have learner plates, a standardized colour and such so they are easily recognized. Followed (in most states) by provisional P plates for new drivers and added restrictions. I think all of these are severly lacking in the US of A.
FREEEDOM! or something

My younger brother caused some discomfiture his first day out solo with a Benz 240d manual. Hills + no guts = a wee bit of roll-back/lurching.

As I've endured my daughter learning to drive over the last six months, I have often thought that this would be perfect for the rear bumper:
It might be a little too subtle, though, since probably few people know what it means. Still, a little warning sticker of some kind would be nice.
And a brake pedal on the passenger side, please.

I always let my car roll back a little to let others know I'm driving stick and sometimes shit may happen, so they'll keep their distance.
Needless to say, people are idiots.

I was totally unprepared for how harrowing the first few hours would be. She improved significantly after about the 8 total hour threshold, but during those first outings I felt incredibly vulnerable.

Congrats to the both of you. My daughter didn't stall my car until the 4th time, when she forgot she was in gear and let the clutch out, but she was holding the brake, so just a tiny-bit of embarrassment.

Funny story, after I bought my car I was tooling around by the beach with some friends in tow. The area is pretty hilly, and I was still fairly inexperienced at hill starts. In my hubris I decided not to use the handbrake to stop rolling backward, so when I let go of the brake at a stoplight I rolled about 8 feet backwards. Luckily, there was nobody behind me, but a lady on the sidewalk laughed and shouted, "Just learned stick?" as I sheepishly gunned it and pulled away.
Moral of the story? Use the damn handbrake.

My sister needs this. She got nervous one time in a Tim Hortons parking lot and would not move because people were too close behind her.Even though they weren't, they were at least 8 feet behind us. Her words "These people don't know how to drive, they are not supposed to come so close to the car in front of them" Okay sis...

Pro tip: buy your clutch a bouquet of flowers, some jewelry, and a nice dinner before you abuse it before learning stick. It helps soften the blow.

I do that too. Especially with the handbrake currently dead in the rally car. No handbrake + aggressive clutch = I need that extra rollback space, dammit!

In Newfoundland, newly licensed drivers must have a sign in the window of the car they are driving stating "Novice Driver".I know it's not the same as "Learning stick shift" But at least it makes people aware.

There's a stoplight in my town that's on a fairly steep grade and has a left turn lane that's too short, so it's not uncommon for me to have someone try to squeeze into the left turn lane behind me. My Subaru is a lot slower to roll back than other cars I've driven (maybe all the rotating mass of the AWD system?) so it's never been a problem for me.
The other day, I pulled up at this intersection to make a left turn, and noticed that the car in front of me was a classic VW Beetle. For whatever reason, it amused me that here were two stick shift cars with flat 4 engines in a row. Then I remembered what it's like trying to start one of those old Beetles on a grade, and stopped about a half car length behind to give them plenty of room.
When the light turned green, I heard the unmistakable sound of a Beetle engine as the driver mashed the accelerator, rolled back about 3 feet, and stalled. She (I could see now that the driver was a girl) fired it up again, revved the hell out of the little engine, and managed to drive the car through the intersection with only a foot or two of additional rollback.
It made me glad I'd decided to give her the extra space, but I have to wonder if a sign like this would help if she ended up in front of a distracted soccer mom in an SUV. I would kind of expect the SUV to pull right up to her bumper, and only then to notice the sign.

Possibly, the SUV mom wouldn't even notice a sign. So many people seem to be very unobservant.

I was attempting to teach my friend stick...he turned into a slightly downward sloped driveway and got stuck. Trying to back up and not trying to hit that persons fence. And stuck in the middle of the street with the car blocking the road completely. That was tense.
